Socratic Seminar Question #3
I believe that Coates's experience with racism doesn't leave humanity any anticipation that there will ever be any racial equality, ever. His knowledge of living the life of a young black man followed him with the constant fear of death and oppression as well. Death could emerge anywhere whether it's from his own people or the hands or gun of a policeman. The oppression extracts from schools that Coates attended as well as the complex network of the United States which exploits to maintain minorty class, especially Black people under their power and control to demote their role within civilization. Our civilization lives off of racism and was built upon it. Coates's intentions were to reveal the hopelessness of rectifying this racial matter and he does this by discussing his own experience as a young black man in America. With that being said, this leaves the reader with the reality of racism of the United States and what big of a target it feels like to be black in America consuming the constant thoughts of terror, dismay, and dismoralized mindset.
I agree with you 100%. America lives off consuming energy from the minority. We threaten them. Black people threaten them. It’s why they feel the need to keep us captured. It’s why they mentally target us. Although I couldn’t personally relate to the authors experiences, I understood his perspective and his motive. He was raw. Through his experiences and everything he learned, he wrote the book to remind people that society has put black people in a place it’ll be hard for them to rise out of. It wasn’t just his stories. It was a reality check.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your statement. Although America has progressed, racism is still a reoccurring issue. Coates didn't have any intention of conveying hope in the mind of his son or the intended audience. He tells it how it is and includes his own personal anecdotes to make his point credible.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with your statement I do believe that Coates leaves a little amount of hope towards the future, including his sons. If he would't have hope then what would that show his son. Of course he wants to give his son the world. Nothing is ever constant, nothing will ever stay the same, people change, things change. It may take time, but it'll happen. This oppression will cease and we will unit.
